EL SOBRANTE, Contra Costa County — October 23, 2026. A substantial road-stabilization project is being planned on San Pablo Dam Road, about 200 feet southeast of La Honda Road. The Contra Costa County Public Works project page estimates construction at $4.65 million, with work expected to start in spring or summer 2027 and finish in fall 2027, depending on permits and procurement.
What would the work include?
The county proposes a stitch-pile retaining wall to stabilize a damaged road embankment. The work also includes storm-drain repair, new guardrails, reconstruction of the far-right lane’s affected pavement and shoulder and embankment improvements. This scope is about a documented local road problem, not a general resurfacing of every street in El Sobrante.
What is the project status?
As of the county’s August 2026 update, design was nearing completion and California Environmental Quality Act and federal NEPA steps were cleared, but additional resource agency permits were still being pursued. The county schedule listed fall 2026 advertising, winter 2027 bidding and 100 estimated working days. A future construction date is a forecast, not a claim that road crews are on site now.
Who pays?
The county identifies the Federal Highway Administration Emergency Relief Program and local gas-tax funds as sources. A construction cost estimate is distinct from the final bid award, contract changes or total lifetime maintenance cost. Residents should examine the bid results before assuming a contractor or exact price has been selected.
What should commuters do?
Use current county road notices and on-site signs for actual closures. Drivers should not extrapolate an upcoming lane closure from the construction estimate alone. The county lists Bradley Olazo as the project manager and publishes contact details on its project page.
