EL SOBRANTE, Contra Costa County — October 23, 2026. Drivers on certain county-maintained roads near El Sobrante may see traffic controls for a safety project that spans several communities. According to Contra Costa County’s August 20 construction announcement, the Countywide Guardrail Upgrades Phase II project began August 24 and is scheduled to continue through Tuesday, November 17, 2026, weather permitting.
Where will crews work?
The county identifies multiple communities, including El Sobrante, East Richmond Heights, San Pablo, Rodeo, Pinole, Lafayette, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Alamo and Danville. The exact locations are listed in the official guardrail work list. Examples within El Sobrante include locations on Clark Road, Manor Road and Olinda Road. A countywide project does not mean every road in each community will be closed.
What is being replaced?
The project covers guardrail posts, metal rail and crash end treatments, upgrading older barriers toward newer roadside safety standards. Some sites require concrete anchor blocks or retaining walls. The purpose is to reduce risks from roadway departures rather than expand vehicle lanes.
What should commuters expect?
Work is generally scheduled weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. excluding holidays, subject to weather. The county warns that drivers may experience delays of up to ten minutes in affected work zones. Crews will use signs and traffic controls. A specific trip may have no delay or a different impact, depending on what is happening at that site.
How is the project paid for?
The county’s October 22 public works inventory lists a $1,586,000 bid amount for Phase II and classifies it as in construction. A state Highway Safety Improvement Program grant and local gas-tax funds are among the funding sources. This figure applies to the countywide package, not just El Sobrante.
